Campbell Baker is a recent UCLA graduate who studied Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society.
Their interests lie at the intersection of microbiology, space exploration, environmental health, and planetary protection. Through two summers with the Space Life Sciences Training Program at NASA Ames Research Center, Campbell investigated microbial responses to Mars-like stratospheric conditions and evaluated methods for reducing and recovering microbial contamination from spacecraft-relevant materials. Their most recent work examined femtosecond-laser treatments across a diverse group of bacterial and fungal isolates.
Campbell has also conducted cancer-related microbiology research at the UCLA School of Dentistry and led campus sustainability research through UCLA’s Sustainability Action Research program. They are especially interested in research that connects human and environmental health with the challenges of responsible space exploration.
Outside of the lab, Campbell is passionate about reproductive-health advocacy and enjoys hiking, exploring food/thrifting spots in the Bay Area, and spending time with friends.
